Client: Danish Emergency Management Agency
År: 2008/2009

What
The Danish Emergency Management Agency is responsible for coordinating the activities of a range of emergency services, including the fire department, paramedics, police, and other rescue workers. But interagency reporting was difficult and time-consuming. As a result, there was a significant degree of non-compliance. DEMA asked FatDUX to examine the usabi- lity of the online application used during the record-keeping process.

How
It soon became apparent that there was no quick fix to the problems. Therefore, DEMA and FatDUX conducted a series of design-on-the-fly workshops with key stakeholders and repre- sentatives from the various emergency-service organizations. After each workshop, FatDUX prepared working prototypes in PowerPoint of revised designs.

Results
In all, eight workshops were conducted. As a result, the reporting process was simplified, compliance is better, and the quality of the documentation is much higher. Because FatDUX opted to employ an iterative design model, the total cost for the project was lower than a traditional “waterfall” style development process. More importantly, each design iteration was subject to immediate feedback by the very people who would be using it, so minor changes could be made “on the fly” without the need for a lengthy design approval process.
