What
New bridges and the opening of borders within the EU have done away with ferries and lengthy border inspections – places where drivers used to meet informally and exchange stories. We suggested creating a special closed area within the main DTL.eu website where drivers could speak freely about their concerns and share professional tips.
How
FatDUX created the “Kanal 19” universe, which is a password-protected discussion forum. “Kanal 19” is the “chat channel” on CB radios. In this community, drivers could rate rest stops, buy and sell truck accessories, complain about highway conditions, and in general, maintain contact with each other online, even after the offline opportunities to network had greatly decreased.
Results
Launched in late 2008, the community is growing slowly but steadily. At the time of this writing (November 2009), DTL is considering opening the site to all truck drivers – not just those who work for DTL’s membership.
