Black is the new red

red

red? black?

To exit the UCLA family pool via the disabled access ramp (the shortest path to the parking lot) one must pass through an electric gate.  There is a sign near the gate that says, "To open gate, push red button".  The button was replaced recently, and the new button is black, but the sign was not changed.  The button has a new metadata tag though.

  1. Wow. If that "beaten-up, dirty, missing-a-screw and another one is a obvious mismatch" device is the new button, I'd hate to see what the old one looked like. Are things that bad at UCLA they are stealing hardware from abandoned buildings? Someone needs to find out what the costs were for the hardware. Physical plant budget audit time? :-)

  2. The j-box and the plate weren't replaced, only the button and the knurled ring around it are new. And it's not a widely used main public exit; it's the secret back way out that no one but us uses. But yes, things at UCLA are that bad, and thank goodness they're so thrifty! The quick application of a few pennies' worth of sharpie and we've saved the cost of a whole new sign.
