Danish post - 1 km per day

02.02.2009 | Author: Eric Reiss
Our friends, Thomas and Jane, sent us a Christmas card on December 19. It arrived today, February 2.

The address was absolutely correct. So was the postage. Why did this letter take six weeks to cover a fairly short distance? Who knows? - it just plunked into our mailbox unannounced.

letter

Six weeks to make a journey of 30km!

The Danish postal authorities have been under press for years - first because of the fax, now because of e-mail. The short and the long of it: people send fewer letters. Not surprisingly, there's been talk that the Danish postal service will be bought up by a larger organization - the German postal authorities, for example.

In the meantime, here in Copenhagen, we now have TWO postal services: the official Danish government sanctioned service and CityMail, a private carrier.

So how are the Danes reacting to decreased traffic and increased competition? By reducing the number of folks manning the counters in post offices, by installing centralized automatic package dispensers so the carriers don't need to actually deliver stuff to individual addresses, by raising the postal rates - and, seemingly, by distributing second-class mail (Economique) at their leisure.

What a way to run a business...

  1. Why this post? Are you angry?
Do you want to discuss the matter?
    Ok, heres my take:
-I have noticed no reduction i quality from the danish postal service.
-The personel at my postoffice, are professional, helpfull and almost McDonalds like more-sale aware.
-My letters seem to arrive on time.
-My postman wears a bright red coat and white gloves (no shit!) and asks politely about the progress of my kids.
-I love the idea of the automated package dispenser (I have to see them work of course).

I so I think, why did this package arrive so late?
-Simple human error (they are really sorry...).
-Bad interface design on the "something-is-wrong-here" machine?

Is this letter a black swan?

Ok, this post in unserious, I got caught in the spirit on a dull wednesday morning :-)

  2. :) I'm not angry at all. Clearly this letter got lost. And my own postman is also really nice. But my local post office sucks, and I strongly suspect the package dispensers are merely a way to cut down on service by disguising this as better service.

  3. Hmm yah. I lived in Denmark for 4 years. The service industry (anything from telecoms, home repairs, post service, general store & restaurant service) is probably the worst in the world, at least according to my experiences. I figure this is due to extreme social tendencies of the government and the country as whole.

Employees just seem to care a lot less about their customers or their job than elsewhere. I am talking primarily about the service industry.
Just as an example, I waited for 2 weeks before some schmuck from the telecom came to fix my DSL line. It took him 2 days because the first day it was 15:00 and it would be a crime if he stayed a minute past his work hours so he just took off leaving his tools behind and showed up the next day as if nothing happened.

Other than that, life in Denmark was great.

  4. Well, the news last week in the US was that to trim costs, the US postal service was going to deliver only 5 days a week instead of 6. And in terms of level of service, I've seen only two general sides: postal employees who are kind, go the extra mile, and truly try to help, and the other kind that dawdles behind the counter when the line is a mile long, or don't respond in a proactive manner when approved.

  5. Just wondered about your title for the post.

    According to Google:
    (30 km) per (6 week) = 29.7619048 m per hour

    Henrik :)

  6. Yeah. I meant to write "1 km per day", which while not particularly accurate is closer. In fact, I'll fix this now. And according to Krak, the actual distance was 34.2 km.

  7. Here's a quick follow-up. The same district postal center (Hillerød) pulled the same stunt last week: a letter from the Danish Pension Association, ATP, which was dated June 9, arrived on August 12. Good grief! Post Danmark, get your damned act together!
